A Fundraiser for Dominque!

We had the pleasure of getting to know Dominique while he was training at the Underground in preparation  for his canoeing trip. The trip is to honour his uncle who died of a massive heart attack at age 42 and to raise awareness about heart disease. Dominique is in the process of canoeing his uncle's ashes to New Orleans from Saskatchewan. Check out his website Canoeing to New Orleans

Amber is spear heading a fundraiser to help Dominique obtain his dream. There will be a BBQ held at the Brick on October 20th.  On Monday, there will be a silent auction starting... some of the items up to grab are an autograph Steve MacIntyre hockey stick, gift certificate and more....
...rumor has it that two coaches agreed to put them selves up for auction :) The highest bidder will get to turn the tables around and put together a WOD for them to do... should be fun!

Th auction starts on Monday! Stay tuned for more details!

Skins Canada at the gym!

SKINS are coming to BADLANDS UNDERGROUND Thursday, Sept 27!

Be sure to come out Thursday, September 27 from 4pm to 8pm as we welcome Rod Roblin from SKINS Canada to learn about the many benefits of training and recovering in these amazing garments.

“SKINS™ is the global leader in cardio-vascular acceleration gear and their products feature premium body-molded performance gradient compression with built-in BioAcceleration Technology™. The garments are engineered to provide the correct level of surface pressure to specific body parts, triggering an acceleration of blood flow that delivers more oxygen to working muscles to enhance their performance. Improved circulation also helps eliminate lactic acid build-up and other metabolic wastes so you can go harder longer and recover faster.”

“The improved oxygenation is most marked in recovery from vigorous exercise. As a result, muscle repair is faster, with a greater effect if your SKINS™ are worn for longer. The best effects on Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS), which can last for more than 48 hours, are seen after 8 hours during which pain, muscle weakness and alertness are dramatically improved.”

Buzz on Coffee

For all you coffee drinkers out there... as with everything moderation is key :) Not suggesting you start drinking coffee just thought these articles were interesting.

When researchers looked at specific causes of death, they found that coffee drinkers had lower rates of:
  • Heart disease
  • Lung disease
  • Stroke
  • Injuries and accidents
  • Diabetes
  • Infections
Cancer deaths were similar in frequency among those who did or did not drink coffee.
Observing a lower death rate among coffee drinkers does not prove that coffee itself is responsible. A study of this type cannot determine cause and effect....

M.D. Harvard Medical School

Many studies have recently been published suggesting coffee is not the health-damaging beverage it’s been portrayed to be; research now suggests coffee can lower your risk for type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, dementia, stroke, and cancers of the liver, kidney and prostate

FGB Friday!!

In this workout you move from each of five stations after a minute. This is a five-minute round from which a one-minute break is allowed before repeating. We've used this in 3 and 5 round versions. The stations are:
  1. wallball shots
  2. sumo deadlift high pull
  3. box jump
  4. push press
  5. row for calories
The clock does not reset or stop between exercises. On call of "rotate," the athlete/s must move to next station immediately for good score. One point is given for each rep, except on the rower where each calorie is one point

Too Much Sugar Makes You Stupid :)

Story at-a-glance

  • A new UCLA study shows that fructose impairs your memory and learning; this is the first study to demonstrate that excess fructose consumption can directly damage your brain
  • The research also indicates that omega-3 fats, specifically DHA, can mitigate fructose’s damaging effects on brain function
  • Concern over skyrocketing obesity rates have inspired a new four-part HBO documentary series called “The Weight of the Nation”, which can be viewed in its entirety for free
  • Dangerous type 2 diabetes drugs are again brought into the spotlight by a whistle blower who reports that Takeda Pharmaceuticals concealed and downplayed adverse events reports for its diabetes drug Actos, including hundreds of reports of heart failure; the drug has been banned in Germany and France and is the subject of hundreds of lawsuits, but continues to be sold in the U.S.
